For all those snotty Face Timing iPhoners, we finally have an Android app that’s just as good or even better when it comes to video chatting. Within just a few days of its release Google Duo has managed to compete in the “Top Free in Android Apps” chart on Play Store. It’s ahead of apps like Pokémon Go and Snapchat! Now that really says something about the popularity of this app. Clearly, this video chatting app must be worthwhile. Here’s why we’re pro-Google Duo.
Using the app is as simple as tapping the video camera logo and opening it up to see a video of your face sans any branding. There are buttons on the bottom that then allow you to check your phonebook or make an instant call to a recent contact. This standalone video chatting app has no other services like messaging to complicate its use.
Unlike Apple’s Face Time app, Google Duo is not limited to one kind of phone. It works equally well on an iOS phone as it does on an Android. This will make it a more widely used app since both can use it to connect with fellow operating systems and with their counterparts too.
Though the idea was to keep it simple, it has included this one new feature that makes it quite an interesting thing. It’s called Knock Knock which is currently only available to Android users. With this feature the person receiving the call can view a live preview of the person on the other side of the call even before they choose to answer it. According to Google, this breaks down some of the sense of intrusiveness for people sceptical of engaging in a face-to-face chat.
This app is based on Web Real-Time Communication which is a standard that allows video, voice and P2P file transfer without any additional software or plugins. This makes your video chat end-to-end encrypted so you don’t have to worry about being spied on by anyone, including Google!
We are gonna use the cliché here. Not everything in life is free, but this app is; because why should only the Face Timers have all the fun! With a recent rating of 4.5 on Play Store, this app is definitely our current favourite.
