Now 8 years and over a billion users later, it has introduced this new feature that encourages engagement through your Status. So, those 1 billion plus users who send more than 50 billion messages including more than 3 billion photos, 700 million videos and 80 million GIFs and memes to keep things interesting will now have newer social-networking capabilities on WhatsApp.

What is the new WhatsApp Status feature?

Status’ won’t be limited to boring text messages anymore. You can now express yourself using short videos, photos and GIFs as your WhatsApp Status. This updates will be visible to everyone on your WhatsApp contact list and will disappear in 24 hours. whatsapp status feature Seems familiar? This “new” Status feature is quite similar to Instagram Stories, which itself is much like the Snapchat Story feature. However, unlike both these social media apps, WhatsApp Status will incorporate the end-to-end encryption that it’s always provided to its users. Also, only your contacts will be able to see these Status’ and you can choose to tweak your privacy settings to make it visible to only specific people. Another difference is that if your friends comment or react to the updated status, it will be only visible to you in your chat with that friend. This makes it easier to share your everyday experience with all your contacts on WhatsApp rather than sending pictures to individual ones on your list. This new Status will get its own tab between the Calls and Chats tab in the UI. On clicking it, you will be able to see your contacts’ recent status updates. This is the tab where you create your own Status too and can delete it anytime you want. If you’re already used to posting ‘Stories’, you should know the drill. Be sure to update your WhatsApp on and after the 24th of February to get this new feature.
