After teasers and leaks for a long while, Sony has finally officially revealed the PlayStation 5 to the world. Live streamed as the ‘Future of Gaming’ event, the launch showcased the next generation console, its variants and the games it will feature in an impressive offering. The console will come in a standard edition with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive as well as a digital edition with no optical drive.
Design & build
The first thing that you’ll notice is the two-tone design that is significant deviation from previous consoles in the series. The design features a sleek vertical alignment, with a black interior sandwiched between white curved exteriors. While the back of the console remains a mystery for now, the front features a USB-C and USB-A port, and along the upper curve you’ll find vents and LED lighting. While the digital edition features a thinner, symmetric design, the standard edition has the optical drive on one side.
The new console has been announced with a bunch of new accessories, some of which were teased earlier. The DualSense controller has been designed to perfectly match the console itself.
The controller will come with haptic feedback, dynamic adaptive triggers and a built-in microphone. Here are some of the other confirmed accessories:
- PULSE 3D wireless headset – offering 3D audio support and dual noise-cancelling microphones
- HD Camera – featuring dual 1080p lenses for gamers to broadcast themselves along with their epic gameplay moments
- Media Remote – a remote control with built-in microphone to navigate movies and streaming services with ease
- DualSense Charging Station – for convenient charging of two DualSense Wireless Controllers.
Some highly anticipated titles are making their way to the PlayStation 5. Sequel to its hit predecessor, Horizon Forbidden West follows Aloy’s journey into a new, unexplored region.
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales gives the successful franchise a new hero with his own story to tell.
GTA 5 will also be making its way to the new console with absolutely new content and performance improvements added.
"With PlayStation 5, we are making a significant leap to deliver a truly new generation of transformative play experiences that will redefine expectations for what games can be," said Jim Ryan, President and CEO of SIE. "Worlds will be richer and more beautiful, they'll captivate your senses in ways you didn't think possible, and you'll be able to experience them much more seamlessly, with lightning fast loading. Today's showcase is just a glimpse of what's to come in the next generation, and we want to thank our community for taking this journey to PS5's launch with us."
Launch dates and pricing are yet to be confirmed. Stay tuned for more info.
