Allen Claudius is the rather fashionable force behind Bowties and Bones
, the men’s fashion, culture and lifestyle blog. Anointed as one of India’s Best Dressed men by GQ India in 2014, Claudius sites the uber stylish Nickelson Wooster – the formidable American fashion maven – as his inspiration.
A sneakerhead, Claudius has tried and tested every sneaker on the block; that’s why we caught up with him to ask him everything about one of the biggest must-have in the fashion world, the sneaker.
Here’s what he has to say:
1) What was your first pair of sneakers?
While I have owned several locally made pairs of 'sneakers' - such as Action shoes or Force 10, because India as a market did not have brands like Nike or Adidas at the time - my first ever pair of sneakers were the Converse Chuck Taylor ones that my older brother bought me when I got into university.
2) What do you like most about sneakers and why?
Above all else, it's the functionality of sneakers that I love. My style is very functional and easy. I run my business and attend client meetings in shorts because Mumbai as a city is humid. I do not stick to a universally accepted dress code just because that is how society functions. Which is why sneakers fit right in.
3) What your current favourite sneaker?
The Air Jordan 1 Bred Toe when in jeans and the Adidas Undefeated UltraBoost when in shorts.
4) Your favourite sneaker brands?
Nike (includes the Jordan Brand), Adidas (includes Originals) and Converse.
5) Your thoughts on pairing sneakers with formal wear?
Absolutely acceptable, if the right pair is chosen. For instance, if you are in a suit, you would want to pair it with something clean and classic like a Converse Chuck Taylor. But there are no real set rules. I could have a
pair of trousers and as easily wear a runner-like
sneaker. I could also team my suit with a pair of tailored shorts or cropped trousers and wear a high top sneaker like the Air Jordan 1. There are no rules, it's just about how you play [sneakers].
6) A pair that's on your wish list?
The 4D runner from Adidas and Levi's Collaboration with Jordan Brand are 2 pairs I have been looking at acquiring.
