Can you think of a more delicious finger food than a plate of perfectly golden brown fries? French fries, fries, chips or finger chips – whatever you may call it, this potato-based snack is delish.

Celebrating the goodness of this snack, on French Fries Day, we spoke to Celebrity Chef Rakhee Vaswani and got her to share her recipes to recreate these divine fries with a healthy twist.

“Don’t settle for others idea of french fries. Make it healthy. Perhaps, skip the potato and use healthier options like sweet potato, avocado and carrot. Then you can settle for extra fries instead of exercise.”

So, get your chef gear and make yourself a delicious but healthy batch of fries.

Things you will need

Potato (or any alternative, such as sweet potato, avocado or carrot), salt (you can also switch/upgrade to citrus zest salt, mushroom salt, varieties of sea salt or chipotle lime) and oil (pick healthier options like olive oil or anything that works for you) – that is enough for the basic preparation. One can also upgrade to chilli garlic powder to spice it up.

3 ways to make healthy fries

Baked French Fries

Line a baking tray with aluminium foil, brush it with olive oil and keep it aside. Scrub the baking potatoes and cut them into desired pieces, then place them on the baking sheet and coat both sides with olive oil. Sprinkle with black pepper, salt and parmesan cheese powder and bake  till golden brown (at 160 degrees C for 20 minutes).

Air Fryer Method

Scrub the potatoes well and slice them down as per your desire. Soak them in water for 30 minutes to remove the starch so that they turn out crispier. Pour a few drops of oil and toss them, then sprinkle salt and desired spices, if you want to. Place them in a greased air fryer and cook for 15 minutes and remember to toss them half way through too. Serve with a dip like honey sriracha sauce.

Baked Avocado/Green Asparagus Fries with Cilantro Lime Dipping Sauce

Preheat your oven and grease a baking sheet. Add flour to a zip lock bag. Add avocado slices (pits removed), seal, and shake to coat avocados in flour. Remove avocados from the bag. In a small bowl, whisk together eggs and water. In a separate bowl, whisk together bread crumbs, garlic powder, chili powder and salt. Dip the flour-coated avocado slices into the egg wash. Next, toss them into the crumb mixture, being sure to coat them well. Place coated avocados on the baking sheet and spray generously with cooking spray. Bake for 10-15 minutes, until crispy and browned. For the dipping sauce, mix mayo, cilantro, Greek yogurt, lime and garlic powder. Serve avacado chips hot.

Chef Tip

Soak your scrubbed potatoes (preferably cold) in cold water to remove starch so that they become crispier when you fry them. Also, double bake or double fry the french fries to make them extremely crispy and yummy so that you can pamper your palate!
