When Nokia brought back the 3310 at MWC 2017, it wasn’t a one-off move. Adding another phone to its nostalgic series, Nokia has announced the release of another classic phone at MWC 2018. This time, the mobile phone producer is bringing back the iconic ‘banana phone’ that became so popular in the ’90s. Also Read: 5 Amazing Things About the New Nokia 3310 That Still Make it a Classic This slider phone was first released in 1996 and was referred to as the banana phone because of the distinctly curved body and yellow colour. Every kid who grew up in the ’90s will remember it as the phone Keanu Reeves’ character Neo used in the 1999 movie, The Matrix. HMD, the company that is producing the new Nokia smartphones is calling this the ‘Nokia Originals’ series. In its glory days, Nokia has launched some very iconic phones with unique designs. Bringing these phones back, with upgrades, of course, will be perfect for customers who value such emotional factors.

When Old Meets New

Like its predecessor, the new Nokia 8110 will feature the signature curved body; so the microphone and earpiece will sitt snuggly against your face when you take a call. Even the pull-down keypad cover has been retained; and we’re grateful for this design element, because that’s what made this phone so special then.

The Specs

Pulling down the cover awakens the screen, sliding it back into place turns it off. The 2.4” QVGA screen is not touch sensitive, but is good for reading text messages and viewing basic images and games. It has a 2-MP camera with a single LED flash that’s good for an occasional picture. However, when it comes to battery life, its 1500mAh power, which is not enough for a smartphone, is more than enough for the 8110 and can keep your handset juiced up for 25 days on standby. It comes with a Qualcomm 205 chipset, 4GB memory (which can be expanded further) and just 512MB RAM but all that’s good enough to run the basic features of this phone. The addition of 4G connectivity is a boost, as it gives the phone access to the internet, at good speed. The phone will be launched with apps like Twitter, Google Maps and Google Assistant to begin with. The phone is expected to go on sale sometime around May or June and will be available in two colours, yellow and black. This phone may not be a technological marvel but it makes for a great collectable or even a good spare phone to have around. PS: Rejoice folks, this phone will have the 3.5mm headphone jack too!
