Source: Health24So if you want to keep your newly-purchased laptop spick and span, and keep diseases at bay, here’s how you can keep your laptop keyboard as clean as a whistle! But before we get to cleaning keyboards, make sure you follow these pre-requisites:
- Before cleaning, it’s recommended to switch the laptop off. A little moisture (from cleaning liquids) can damage the laptop.
- In case you’re using a cleaning liquid/alcohol to clean the laptop, give the laptop some time to dry off properly before switching it on.
- Always wash your hands before and after using the laptop, especially while cleaning it.
- When you're buying a laptop, check how repair-friendly it is, and what exactly constitutes a warranty violation.
Let gravity do its workThe simplest way of cleaning your keyboard is to turn it upside down. Make sure that the laptop is facing the ground and gently shake it. This will help dislodge the bigger debris and crumbs, stuck in the keyboard. But this is the most basic form of cleaning and doesn’t help do away with smaller dust particles that are trapped in the crevices.
Use a vacuumA vacuum cleaner is an effective solution to clean a laptop keyboard too. With a brush attachment and the right power, a vacuum cleaner with an effective brush can clean the keyboard of dust. To make cleaning more effective, you can get a micro vacuum attachment too. While some make use of compressed air too, to clean the keyboard, we won’t suggest it as a preferred method. Because while the compressed air can blow off dust it can also drive the dust further into the crevices.

Use a microfiber clothMicrofiber cloths are an effective way of cleaning keyboards too. These cloths are great at attracting dust and a simple wipe can do the job. For better results, you can choose to just dampen the cloth slightly. But make sure that the cloth isn’t dripping wet and that the laptop is shut off and not connected to any power source.
Use Isopropyl AlcoholIf you want to make sure that your laptop keyboard doesn’t become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs, this is a method that is highly suggested. Again, before implementing this, make sure your laptop is switched off and not connected to any power source. Dip cotton swabs or paper towels in Isopropyl Alcohol and wipe the surface of the keys and the areas between it. Make sure that the swab or the towel isn’t dripping wet. Also, make sure you clean commonly-used keys like the Space Bar and the Enter key more thoroughly. Note: You can buy Isopropyl Alcohol at local medical shops or even order it online.
Pry off the laptop keysUnless your keyboard is really grimy and bothersome, I wouldn’t suggest anyone to use this method. But if you want to get your keyboard cleaned, this method will help you do it the best. Before you pry open the keys, make sure to Google if the keys on your specific laptop are removable in the first place. If they are, you can make use of a flat tool to remove the keys and clean using any of the above methods.
Tip: Take a picture of the keyboard before removing the keys. This will help you put them back in the right place when you’re done. Once you're done, let the laptop sit for a while to ensure that any moisture introduced in the process has a chance to dry off. Post that, fire up your squeaky clean laptop and rest assured about its hygiene levels.
