Ever since the dawn of humanity, we've always tried to find better ways to express ourselves. From the invention of language to the 360-degree videos we record today, our mediums of expression have evolved greatly over the years to keep up with changing times. With the proliferation of the internet over the last couple of decades, we've seen one such medium not only take hold but give rise to an entirely new career. You're experiencing it right now - on a blog. Yes, we're talking about blogging today.

What is a blog and why should you have one?

Before we start, we need to define what blogging is, in the context of this article. While it started off as something you could do exclusively on your own web-domain by creating posts and articles like these, today blogging has many forms. You could be a fashion blogger on Instagram and create great content without ever having to write a complete article. You could be a food blogger on Zomato and build your reputation through detailed, articulate reviews on the platform.

There are many more ways to get started with blogging today to express your interest areas and build expertise in it. While it is true that not everyone is an expert, it is also true that everyone has something to say, and blogging is a great way to put that word forward.

How to get started?

For this article, we're going to explain how to create your own dedicated blog on your own web domain. This can always coexist with your presence on Instagram, Facebook or any other platform of your choice. In fact, that is the way to go if you want your blog to grow today. However, that's the topic of a different piece. For now, let us focus on getting your blog up and running. Here are the steps you need to undertake to have your own blog.

Step 1: Prerequisites

Yes, there are some things to ensure before you can get started. For example, do you have a device which you're comfortable to create content from? If you want to create only visual and audio-visual content, your phone might suffice. However, to create longer articles like these, you'll need at least a laptop. Also, setting up your blog is not exactly a long process, but keep at least half an hour for it to do a good job.

Step 2: Choose a platform

There are many websites that offer great platforms for blogging. However, by far the most popular is WordPress. With millions of users, a huge gallery of free and paid plugins, wide compatibility with other services - there are many factors that make it work. Even if you go for a different platform, the popular options would be Blogger or something like Tumblr. If you're confused at this stage, there are many resources online that talk about the pros and cons of all these platforms.

Step 3: Choose your domain & hosting

Almost any platform you choose will offer to host your blog on a free domain. The downside to that is your URL will always have the name of the platform appended to it. For WordPress, it will look something like blogname.wordpress.com. The other advantages of having your own domain is that you own your blog and there are no limits to what you can do with it. In addition to that, you'll have to pick a hosting service to keep your domain on. Think of a domain as the address to your home, and the hosting as the home you actually live in.

Step 4: Design your blog

The fun part is here. On WordPress, you can pick from a large number of themes, and can customise the look and structure of your blog down to the last detail. While you're at it, try to keep it easy to navigate and read on both desktop and mobile platforms.

Step 5: Publish your first post

That's it, you're ready. Now it is time for the big moment - your first post. If you've decided what your blog is going to be about, a good idea is to introduce yourself and talk about why you chose to start a blog on the topic of your choice. Keep blogging!
