It’s Valentine’s Day. And if you’re among the group of people who loath February 14, simply because you don’t have a reason to celebrate it, we have news for you. There’s someone deserving you can shower your love on – you. There’s a reason we choose to love others – it’s so we get their love back in return. But what happens if you choose to love yourself?
Here’s what happens when you choose to love yourself and feel comfortable in your own skin.
People chasing after perfection are often the unhappiest beings you’ll encounter. Why stress over every pimple and kilogram increase in your weight when you can focus on how great your smile is or how well-proportioned your features are? Granted its slightly exaggerated, but there is a reason we endorse this philosophy of faking it till it becomes second nature. The idea is to rid yourself of the stress related to everything wrong with how you look or feel.
Love Your Body and Mind
Related to the point above, it’s pertinent to mention that getting your mind and body to perform at optimum level can be a great source of happiness. Feeling lethargic and tired all the time is not a healthy feeling to live with. Be kind and gentle towards yourself but don’t let go of your body by eating junk just because it makes you feel good. Meditate and exercise if you’re serious about loving yourself. As Oscar Wilde said, “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance.” It’s time to find out just how true Wilde was.
Revel In Your Uniqueness
We are all afraid of being ridiculed for what we truly believe in. That’s why toeing the line has become the default mode for most of us. We’re all scared of displaying our true feelings and sharing our innermost thoughts because we’re scared of being judged. It’s time to change that. Whether its sharing your true thoughts on demonetisation or supporting the Women’s March, you’ll find it worthwhile if you say what’s on your mind. Your unique qualities will resonate with other like-minded individuals and make you feel more special in the long run.
Trust Your Intuition
Stop being scared and learn to take some risks. Have confidence in your abilities and follow your gut feeling as much as possible. For reasons no one has been able to explain, our mind knows what we want more than we think. By constantly ignoring our intuition we only end up harming ourselves. Whether it’s setting up your own business or writing your first book, have the confidence to back yourself in every situation.
Give Voice To Your Dreams
We’re all conditioned to follow what society thinks we must do. This is where dreams and passions take a hit. Don’t deny those dreams, take that art class you wanted to, book a ticket to your dream destination and buy that expensive watch everyone said you don’t need. Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than the ones you did do – these are Mark Twain’s words, not ours.
