How many times have you heard this: “You never know the real character of someone until adversity strikes”? It’s widely accepted as truth that people are at their least generous when they’re put in a tense situation. But is it?

An annual report called the CAF World Giving Index indexes the most generous countries around the world, and their findings may surprise you. In a nutshell – more people than ever before are performing acts of kindness for random strangers.

“For the first time, more than half of those surveyed say they helped a stranger – a testament to the innate human desire to help others whenever they are in need,” the report reads. And, just to drive the point home, here are some of the countries that have scored the highest for generosity: Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Botswana and Kuwait, all had over 70% of the respondents claiming to have helped a stranger in the last month. Perhaps, then, there is something to be said for undergoing great trials to gain empathy for your fellow man.
