Beyond The Venice of the East, Alappuzha, Kerala

Price per night: Rs 8,490

One of the best ways to explore Kerala is by water. Head to Alappuzha for a unique experience and think about renting a houseboat (or boathouse, call it what you want) – a slow-moving barge covered with a thatched roof, for a leisure trip down a waterway. Beyond the Venice of the East has two- and three-bedroom houseboats you can rent to sail down the backwaters and watch local fishermen cast their Chinese fishing nets. The fully catered houseboats provide a taste of the local cuisine – they serve local Kuttanadan dishes onboard.

On your holiday, plot a course that allows you to explore the local villages, temples, churches and lush paddy fields.
