Zubin Mehta celebrated his 80th birthday with special concerts at Mumbai’s Jamshed Bhabha Theatre at the NCPA last month; and some time ago, the Grammy-nominated DJ Steve Aoki flew down to play his tunes at Kitty Su in Delhi. The music scene in India is quickly changing, and venues are opening their doors to bands and artistes playing electronica, EDM, jazz and everything in between. If you’re a music junkie and like your music live, there are a couple of dozen venues across the country that offer great experiences. We list some of the best:

The Humming Tree, Bengaluru

The Humming Tree, Bangalore

This particular space in Bengaluru positions itself first as a live music venue, and then as a bar. The guys behind Humming Tree opened the space to give lesser-known musicians a platform to come together and collaborate, a move that has given it cult status among music fans.

Windmills Craftworks, Bengaluru

Windmill Craftworks, Bangalore

Another must-visit space in the Garden City, this venue serves up Jazz with a side of house-brewed beer. The jazz club/microbrewery in Whitefield is done up in polished wooden tones and designed to look like a stylish and cozy living room. The live music on stage usually goes in tandem with the amazing view the place has to offer and is a perfect choice for people who like to live it up and don’t mind experimenting with both food and music.

Down the Road, Goa

Down The Road, Goa

Goa is the club goer’s paradise, and Down the Road gives you one of the best live music experiences there. Apart from exotic drinks and scrumptious food, there are always live performances by local bands and musicians.

Hard Rock Café, Nation-wide

Hard Rock Cafe Mumbai

Living up to its name, this venue has hosted up-and-comers, indie bands, cover bands and international DJs and is one of the best venues in Mumbai, Delhi or Bangalore for live gigs. Also to their credit, the waiters often break into a synchronized YMCA jig, and who doesn’t love to dance along to that?

National Centre for Performing Arts, Mumbai

NCPA Mumbai

From plays and stand up comedy to classical concerts, the NCPA in Mumbai has a calendar full of cultural programmes all through the year. Specially if you’re a lover and seeker of the traditional. The NCPA has hosted a number of prolific artists including the aforementioned Mr Mehta, Zakir Hussain and Shivkumar Sharma, who perform there regularly.

Kitty Su, Delhi

Kitty Su, Delhi

Known for celebrating live electronic music and dance culture, Kitty Su is on every party hard person’s hit list in the capital city. It has played host to a number of formidable international names as well, with the likes of DJs Steve Aoki and Zedd spinning tracks there.

Blue Frog, Nation-wide

blueFROG Mumbai

Would it be a tall claim to make if we said that Blue Frog has changed the face of the live music scene in the country? Not quite. With its funky layout, good drink and food menu and cool-kids crowd, it’s one of the best places to head to for live music. Blue Frog opened its doors in Mumbai in 2007 and planned a ruthless schedule of six gigs a week. With several outposts now opening across the country, ‘The Frog’ is also credited with shining a spotlight on the city’s underground music scene (apart from hosting several big-name international artists), which is a testament to the venue’s popularity.
