The nominations for the Billboard Music Awards 2017 are out and some of the biggest names in music are going into battled for a coveted gong (trophy, in music award speak). This year, the big story revolves around the musical ‘power couple’ who’ve picked up a massive number of nominations across the various categories – Drake’s racked up an impressive 22 nominations and Rihanna, 14.
Sounds like the perfect time for a music recap of the last year. Here’s who we think will most likely walk away with the top honours for some of the major awards of the night.
Top R&B Song: Starboy, The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk
Last year was the year of The Weeknd. The versatile artist swept the awards with eight wins from 20 nominations across various categories. He returns this year to prove that it wasn’t a fluke.
Top Rock Song: Stressed Out, Twenty One Pilots
This wildly popular duo burst onto the scene with their captivating performance at the MTV Movie Awards in 2014. Fun fact: they have three songs nominated for this category.
Top Dance Song: This Is What You Came For, Calvin Harris ft. Rihanna
If you’ve been to a nightclub during the last year, you’ve definitely heard this earworm. This is just one of Rihanna’s many appearances on the nominees list.
Top Rap Song: Black Beatles, Rae Sremmurd ft. Gucci Mane
2016 was the year which proved that alternative rap acts are the future of the genre. This brilliant collaboration is just an indication of what’s coming out of the industry now.
Top Hot 100 Song: Closer, The Chainsmokers ft. Halsey
There’s just no way you haven’t heard this song. It’s been played on repeat across the world, parodied and even covered in different genres. Love it or hate it, you can’t deny its popularity.
Top Billboard 200 Album: Lemonade, Beyonce
2016 was the year that Beyonce firmly established herself as the Queen of the scene. The superstar dropped her revolutionary album, Lemonade, on an unsuspecting world and challenged the way we think of storytelling through music.
Top Female Artist: Rihanna
While she may not have featured extensively on this list, that’s mostly because we didn’t want an entire list of just Rihanna songs. She picked up 14 nominations – the highest by any female artist this year – and it’s not too hard to imagine her winning the big prize.
Top Male Artist: Drake
Is it any surprise that Drake is sitting pretty on top of this list? The hip-hop artist had a hell of a year and his music became so much a part of pop culture that we still have memes of his dancing doing the rounds until now.
Top New Artist: Zayn
He dropped his old band, One Direction, along with his last name to complete his reinvention as an artist and Zayn rose like a phoenix from the ashes of his pop-filled past.
Top Artist: Drake/Rihanna
The rumours of their low-key relationship have been whispered about all over the internet and they both had an incredibly successful year, so it’s fitting that the two come up against each other for the biggest award of them all. It’s anyone’s guess when it comes to who’s going to win this award.
