Our materialistic lifestyle places a premium on how much stylish stuff we own and how we are turned out for each occasion. This leads us to collecting stuff that we find no use for as time goes on. In the end, clutter begins to add stress to our lives and distracts us from happiness. If you’ve been feeling anxious or agitated about your life, try to reduce your clutter in the following ways to let some positivity in.

 

Gadget Control

The first thing we need to do is control our obsessive need to buy gadgets. There are simply too many choices and ways for us to get lured into buying electronics today. Create a checklist of your daily life and first see if the gadget you want actually serves a purpose. Don’t buy something just because it’s in vogue or because everyone has one. Analyse your needs and only then decide what you need to buy. And no, you don’t need to obsessively upgrade your gadgets every year.

 

Practice Meditation

Very often, clutter gets associated with physical items. But the growing number of patients suffering from depression and other mental illnesses indicates that we need to declutter mentally as well. There is simply too much we absorb all day and we end up getting stressed with the information overload. Meditation is the answer to your mental health woes. Practice sitting in silence and unclutter your mind.

 

Appreciate Yourself

One of the best ways to rid yourself of clutter is to be happy in your own skin. Whether you’re buying physical objects to show them off or accumulating mental stress to keep on top of your game, it’s important to tell yourself that you and your happiness is what matters above all else. Eventually, you’ll start enjoying the little things and your quality of life will improve.

 

Clear Your House

You know who Marie Kondo is, right? No? Okay, well, she became a bestselling author in 2011 after formulating the KonMari method of removing clutter from your house. In her book, she explains that one way to be happy is to just keep things in your house that give you joy. So, if you’re clearing your wardrobe, don’t feel the pressure to keep your LBD or black suit if it doesn’t really spark joy in you. The Japanese author is known globally as an organisation consultant, so let’s assume she knows what she’s talking about.

 

Clear Your Office

It’s surprising there isn’t a KonMari method for organising office clutter considering just how much stuff we collect and keep at work. But the basic principles can still be applied. To keep yourself organised and on top of things at work go paperless first. Once that’s done, remove the obstacles to your productivity by throwing out stuff that doesn’t give you joy. Just remember, you can’t throw your boss away!

You can also extend this principle to your office computer and remove all the files and programmes that are just hogging space on your hard drive. Try to be as inconspicuous on social media sites to avoid losing your mental equilibrium. Clutter, as you may already realise, comes in all shapes and sizes.

 

Visualise Your Future

Many of us simply go through our daily lives without thinking of the big picture. There is nothing concrete that most people strive for, which in turn extends to their haphazard lifestyle. Instead, try to break out of the mould by maintaining a clear diary of your goals and bring order to your life. You will see how adding meaning and order to your daily life calms you down considerably.

 

Travel More

Many of us don’t realise the transformative power of travel. We prefer to travel to see places and click selfies in front of famous monuments. But real travel is all about meeting and connecting with people from another place and learning from their lifestyle. The secret to happiness is generally found outside your home and comfort zone. If you travel for a longer period and live out of your 40-litre backpack, you’ll also realise just how much of the stuff you have back home you don’t really need. Take that long-pending holiday now.
