In her book, she explains that one way to be happy is to just keep things in your house that give you joy. So, if you’re clearing your wardrobe, don’t feel the pressure to keep your LBD or black suit if it doesn’t really spark joy in you. The Japanese author is known globally as an organisation consultant, so let’s assume she knows what she’s talking about.
Clear Your OfficeIt’s surprising there isn’t a KonMari method for organising office clutter considering just how much stuff we collect and keep at work. But the basic principles can still be applied. To keep yourself organised and on top of things at work go paperless first. Once that’s done, remove the obstacles to your productivity by throwing out stuff that doesn’t give you joy. Just remember, you can’t throw your boss away! You can also extend this principle to your office computer and remove all the files and programmes that are just hogging space on your hard drive. Try to be as inconspicuous on social media sites to avoid losing your mental equilibrium. Clutter, as you may already realise, comes in all shapes and sizes.
Visualise Your FutureMany of us simply go through our daily lives without thinking of the big picture. There is nothing concrete that most people strive for, which in turn extends to their haphazard lifestyle. Instead, try to break out of the mould by maintaining a clear diary of your goals and bring order to your life. You will see how adding meaning and order to your daily life calms you down considerably.
Travel MoreMany of us don’t realise the transformative power of travel. We prefer to travel to see places and click selfies in front of famous monuments. But real travel is all about meeting and connecting with people from another place and learning from their lifestyle. The secret to happiness is generally found outside your home and comfort zone. If you travel for a longer period and live out of your 40-litre backpack, you’ll also realise just how much of the stuff you have back home you don’t really need. Take that long-pending holiday now.
